What it's like
NINE SPICES is a basement standing room with a capacity of around 200, so you're never far from the stage. It's run by the group behind Rinky Dink Studio, and its schedule covers booked indie-band shows and events organized by the bands themselves. Past listings also mention participatory events such as flea markets. The venue says that the lobby and floor are non-smoking, which makes it a comfortable pick if smoke bothers you.
The room is small enough that popular shows can feel crowded. Arriving near the Open time helps if you want a spot near the front.
How to get there
NINE SPICES is on the east side of Kabukicho, a bit further from Shinjuku Station than other venues in the area. The easiest routes:
- Higashi-Shinjuku Station (Fukutoshin Line / Toei Oedo Line): about 3 to 7 minutes on foot. This is the closest station.
- Seibu-Shinjuku Station: about 5 to 11 minutes on foot.
- JR Shinjuku Station (East Exit): about 8 to 12 minutes on foot.
Kabukicho is a busy nightlife district, so keep an eye on your belongings and ignore street touts. Because the walk takes you through small streets, search for "Shinjuku NINE SPICES" in your map app and follow it to the HANROKU Building. The venue is in the basement.
Tickets and the door
Ticket details are listed on each show's page on the venue's website. Many shows use e+ or LivePocket, and many bands also take reservations directly (called torioki, where you give your name and pay at the door). Each show page on this site links to the official page when one is available. If you're new to the system, our first-timer's guide explains Adv/Door prices and reservations.
- Drink fee: A separate one-drink fee is collected at the entrance. Our live house guide explains how it works.
- Bags: Coin lockers are reported to be available, which is handy if you're carrying luggage. Confirm before you rely on them.
- Last train: Check your last train home before you go. Most trains in Tokyo stop around midnight.
