What it's like

BASEMENT BAR is a standing room with a drink counter near the entrance, and the stage sits in a corner of the room, so you end up very close to the band. The capacity of about 250 makes it one of the larger rooms among Shimokitazawa's small venues, but it still feels intimate. Shows range from indie rock and punk to acoustic sets and DJ nights, and the venue is also a regular stop for touring acts.

The venue's own schedule is a mix of evening live shows and special events. Weekdays are mostly evening shows, while weekends can include daytime shows and late-night events. That means it pays to check the Open and Start times on each listing.

How to get there

BASEMENT BAR is a longer walk than most Shimokitazawa venues, about 10 to 15 minutes from the station. The venue's own directions follow the South Exit shopping street:

  1. Leave through the station gates on the south side and walk straight south along the South Exit shopping street (南口商店街).
  2. Keep going straight as the street joins Chazawa-dori and passes the Daizawa three-way junction, heading toward Sangenjaya.
  3. Look for the liquor store Kakuyasu (酒のカクヤス) on the right, with a pink sign reading 酒. The entrance is behind its bicycle parking, down to the basement.
  4. If you reach a Lawson or a Bamiyan, you've gone too far.

Because shop signs change, keep your map app handy and search for "Shimokitazawa BASEMENT BAR." Allow extra time the first time.

One building, two venues

BASEMENT BAR and THREE are on the same floor of the same building. Both run live shows, sometimes on the same night. Before you head down, check which venue your ticket is for. You can read more in our THREE guide.
